On 18 May 1960, 127,621 people filled Hampden for the European Cup final between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt — and watched what generations of judges have called the greatest match ever played. Real won 7–3, Ferenc Puskás scoring four and Alfredo Di Stéfano three, completing five straight European Cups with an exhibition of attacking football so complete that the Glasgow crowd — famously hard markers — stayed long after the whistle to roar the Spaniards round a lap of honour. Veterans of the terracing spoke of it for the rest of their lives as a conversion experience.
Glasgow’s European story had already begun — Hampden staged a Cup Winners’ Cup final as early as 1962 — and 1966 brought another landmark: Borussia Dortmund beating Liverpool 2–1 after extra time to take the Cup Winners’ Cup, the first European trophy won by a German club, secured under the Glasgow floodlights.
The 1976 European Cup final gave Hampden a colder classic: Bayern Munich 1, Saint-Étienne 0, the great French side twice denied by the frame of Hampden’s old-fashioned square goalposts — les poteaux carrés, the square posts, still mourned in Saint-Étienne, where supporters’ groups have named themselves after the woodwork. When the posts were retired they were eventually presented to the French club: Glasgow’s driest gift.
The rebuilt Hampden earned the modern finals. In 2002 the Champions League final brought Real Madrid back for their centenary, and Zinédine Zidane won it against Bayer Leverkusen with a left-footed volley from the edge of the box — instantly among the most replayed goals ever scored, and scored, connoisseurs of symmetry note, on the same turf as 1960. Five years later the 2007 UEFA Cup final saw Sevilla beat Espanyol on penalties in an all-Spanish thriller, and 2021 added Euro 2020’s Hampden fixtures to the ledger.
No city of Glasgow’s size has hosted anything like this list — and the explanation is the simplest fact in this section: for half a century, when Europe needed the biggest and loudest football ground it possessed, the answer was on the south side of Glasgow.
