Every ancient university keeps a roll of giants; Glasgow’s peculiarity is how many of its giants invented whole subjects. Adam Smith, student and then professor of logic and moral philosophy from 1751, worked out in Glasgow lectures the ideas of sympathy, markets and the division of labour that became The Theory of Moral Sentiments and The Wealth of Nations — economics, in short, drafted for Glasgow students, with the city’s tobacco merchants as his laboratory across the road. He called his professorship the happiest period of his life, and served the college as dean and rector besides.

The Enlightenment bench was deep. Joseph Black, professor of medicine and chemistry, discovered carbon dioxide (‘fixed air’) and the latent heat that his friend James Watt — the college’s instrument maker, given room and encouragement when the guilds barred him — turned into the improved steam engine. Thomas Reid founded the Common Sense school of philosophy from Smith’s old chair; and the medical school began the climb that would carry Glasgow names through this site’s Health pages — above all Joseph Lister, whose professorship here produced antiseptic surgery.

The Victorian summit was William Thomson, Lord Kelvin: professor of natural philosophy from 1846, aged twenty-two, to 1899 — fifty-three years in one chair. He formulated the second law of thermodynamics and the absolute temperature scale that bears his name, created the first true university physics laboratory, and engineered the transatlantic telegraph cables that shrank the planet, patents and knighthood following; he is buried beside Newton in Westminster Abbey, and his statue sits in Kelvingrove Park below his windows. Beside him, W. J. Macquorn Rankine effectively founded engineering as an academic science — the Clyde’s shipbuilders calculated with Rankine’s tables.

The modern roll runs on: John Logie Baird trained at the Royal Technical College (now Strathclyde), as his own page tells; Jocelyn Bell Burnell took her physics degree at Glasgow before discovering pulsars; James Black, Nobel laureate for beta-blockers, began his research career in the university’s orbit; and the university’s Nobel tally — from Soddy’s isotopes to modern medicine — keeps a respectable European pace.

The pattern is the city’s own: theory next door to practice — Smith among merchants, Kelvin among shipbuilders, Lister among factory accidents — each made sharper by the other. Glasgow’s academics were great, in large part, because Glasgow kept asking them useful questions.
