John Logie Baird gave the world one of the defining inventions of the twentieth century: television. A sickly minister’s son from Helensburgh, trained in Glasgow’s engineering classrooms, he failed at one money-making scheme after another before building — out of biscuit tins, darning needles and sealing wax — the first apparatus ever to transmit a recognisable moving image. In January 1926 he showed a room of sceptical scientists the first true television picture, and the world was never quite the same again.

A Helensburgh boyhood

John Logie Baird was born in 1888 at Helensburgh, the pleasant seaside town on the Firth of Clyde, the youngest child of the Rev. John Baird, a Church of Scotland minister. He was a bright but chronically sickly boy, plagued all his life by ill health, and it was this frailty as much as anything that would push him away from ordinary employment and towards a life of invention. Even as a schoolboy he showed a knack for gadgets, wiring up his parents’ house with a private telephone exchange and a homemade electric-lighting system.

Baird went to Glasgow to be trained as an engineer, studying electrical engineering at the Royal Technical College — the great Glasgow institution, now the University of Strathclyde, that had schooled so many of the engineers who built the ships and machines of the Clyde. He went on to the University of Glasgow, though the First World War interrupted his degree. It was a thoroughly practical education, rooted in the city’s traditions of engineering and hard problem-solving, and it gave him the grounding he would later turn to such original use.

The failed schemes

Success came to Baird late and hard. Too unwell to hold down a conventional engineering post, he threw himself instead into a string of money-making schemes, nearly all of which ended in failure. He marketed a medicated ‘undersock’ to keep feet warm; he tried making jam in Trinidad, only to be defeated by the insects; he dabbled in soap and sundry other ventures. Again and again he was left broke and dispirited. Yet these lean, restless years taught him resourcefulness and a habit of improvisation that would, in the end, serve him better than any steady salary could have done.

Biscuit tins & needles

Living on almost nothing on the south coast of England, Baird turned to an idea that many had theorised about but none had achieved: sending a moving picture by wire and wireless. With no money for proper equipment, he built his apparatus from whatever lay to hand — an old tea chest, a biscuit tin, a cardboard disc, darning needles, bicycle-lamp lenses, sealing wax and string. Crude as it looked, it worked. By 1925 he had transmitted the first flickering, recognisable image: the head of a ventriloquist’s dummy he called ‘Stooky Bill’, and then the face of a startled office boy, the first living person ever televised.

On 26 January 1926, in his cramped laboratory in Frith Street, Soho, Baird gave the first public demonstration of a working television system to a party of some forty scientists from the Royal Institution and a reporter from The Times. They crowded up the narrow stairs to watch, flickering but unmistakable, the first true television pictures ever shown — moving images of a human face, transmitted from one room to another. It is the moment usually taken as the birth of television, and it made the once-penniless Scot suddenly famous the world over.

Reaching further

From there Baird pushed forward at astonishing speed. In 1927 he sent television pictures by telephone line from London to Glasgow, a distance of over four hundred miles; in 1928 he achieved the first transatlantic transmission, to New York, and demonstrated colour television for the first time. He founded the Baird Television Development Company, and from 1929 the BBC used his thirty-line mechanical system for Britain’s earliest television broadcasts. For a few heady years, television meant Baird, and the future seemed to belong entirely to him.

Superseded, not forgotten

But Baird’s system was mechanical, built around a spinning disc, and it was soon overtaken by fully electronic television, which used the cathode-ray tube to produce a sharper, brighter picture. After a head-to-head trial, the BBC dropped his system in 1937 in favour of an electronic rival. Baird never stopped inventing, working to the last on colour, three-dimensional and high-definition television, and he died in 1946. His mechanical method did not survive — but the thing itself, television, most certainly did, and the world still remembers the Glasgow-trained dreamer who first made it work.
