Robert Carlyle is one of Scotland’s most versatile and intense actors, a Glaswegian equally convincing as the terrifying Begbie in Trainspotting and the warm-hearted Gaz in The Full Monty. His career has run from gritty British realism to Hollywood and back.
A Maryhill upbringing
Born in Maryhill, Glasgow, in 1961, the son of a painter and decorator, Carlyle left school at sixteen and worked various jobs before his passion for drama took hold. He studied at the Glasgow Arts Centre and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and co-founded his own theatre company, finding his way into the city’s cultural life.
Cracker and Hamish Macbeth
His early success came on television, in the crime drama Cracker, opposite Robbie Coltrane, and in the title role of the gentle Highland comedy Hamish Macbeth.
Begbie and Gaz
In 1996 and 1997 Carlyle took the two roles that made his name worldwide: the psychotic Francis Begbie in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, one of the most memorable characters in British cinema, and Gaz, the leader of the amateur strippers in The Full Monty, one of the most successful British films ever made, for which he won the BAFTA for Best Actor. He has since played a James Bond villain and starred in major television series.
A Glasgow actor
Among the many fine actors to come out of Glasgow, among them James McAvoy, Carlyle is one of the most respected, and he was appointed OBE for his services to drama.
