They called Robert Napier the father of Clyde shipbuilding, and for once the title was no exaggeration. More than any other single figure, he made the River Clyde into the shipbuilding capital of the world. He built the reliable marine engines that made ‘Clyde-built’ a byword for quality; he engined and built the first ships of the Cunard line, and took the stake that helped bring that company into being; he became the Royal Navy’s great warship builder; and — perhaps most important of all — he trained the remarkable generation of engineers who went on to found half the famous yards of the river.

A Dumbarton engineer
Robert Napier was born in Dumbarton on 21 June 1791, into a family with a long tradition of bell-wrights, blacksmiths and engineers. Trained first at his father’s forge, he spent a spell in Edinburgh working under the great lighthouse engineer Robert Stevenson before returning west and, in 1815, setting up on his own account in Glasgow as an engineer and smith. His cousin David Napier — who had built the engine castings for Henry Bell’s pioneering steamer, the Comet of 1812 — was already at work in the new science of steam navigation, and it was into this world, on the eve of the Clyde’s great age, that Robert Napier now stepped.
The Camlachie engines
In 1821 Napier leased the Camlachie Foundry from his cousin David and began building engines — at first for mills, and soon for ships. In 1823 he produced his first marine engine, for the paddle steamer Leven; so soundly was it made that it outlasted three vessels in turn, and survives to this day, preserved in Dumbarton. As the business grew he moved to the Vulcan and then the Lancefield foundries, and designed a series of improved marine steam engines — among them the side-lever and steeple engines that set the pattern for the paddle steamers of the day. Such work steadily won him a name as the finest engine-builder on the river. From the first, the mark of a Napier engine was reliability — the quality on which everything else would be built.
Making ‘Clyde-built’
That reliability made Napier’s reputation, and with it the reputation of the whole river. In 1838 a Parliamentary enquiry found that his marine engines were both more dependable and cheaper than those the Royal Navy was then buying, and he became almost overnight the Admiralty’s principal supplier. The motto of his works, one of his managers recalled, was simply ‘Good Work’: questions of time and cost were always made to give way to a single test — was this the best that could be done? It was Napier, as much as anyone, who made ‘Clyde-built’ a guarantee of quality recognised across the world, and helped turn the Clyde into the heart of the shipbuilding industry.
Cunard
Napier’s most far-reaching venture came at the end of the 1830s. When the Canadian merchant Samuel Cunard set out to win the contract for a regular transatlantic mail steamer service, it was to Napier that he turned for the ships. Napier not only built the engines for the first four Cunard liners; he took a shareholding in the enterprise, and stood among the founders, in 1839–40, of the company that the world would come to know as the Cunard Line. Without his engines and his backing, the most famous shipping line in history might never have got afloat. It was the beginning of a century in which Clyde-built ships would carry the traffic of the world’s oceans.
From engines to ships
Having conquered the engine, Napier turned to the hull. In 1841 he opened his own iron shipbuilding yard at Govan, on the south bank of the Clyde, so that he could build whole iron ships as well as engine them; it was managed at first by William Denny, who soon left to found his own celebrated shipbuilding yard at Dumbarton. From 1840 he became known above all as a builder of warships, winning contract after contract from the Royal Navy and from foreign fleets; his yard produced pioneering ironclads such as HMS Erebus and, in 1861, HMS Black Prince, the largest ship then built on the Clyde. To supply his works with wrought-iron plates and forgings, he took over the Parkhead Forge in the East End — the great works later made famous by Beardmore. In 1853 he took his sons into partnership, and the firm became R. Napier & Sons.
The school of the Clyde
Napier’s greatest product, though, was not a ship or an engine but a generation of men. His Govan works became the training ground of Clyde engineering, drawing in a remarkable body of young managers and apprentices, many of whom went on to found or lead the great yards of the river. Among them were David Elder and his son John Elder, whose partnership grew into the mighty Fairfield yard; the engineer A.C. Kirk; the shipbuilder William Pearce; and the testing pioneer David Kirkaldy. It was often said that the whole Clyde had passed through Napier’s hands. In training the men who built the yards, he shaped the river’s next hundred years.
West Shandon
The man behind the works was quietly cultivated: a keen collector of paintings and fine art, who built himself a great mansion, West Shandon, on the shore of the Gareloch, later famous as a hydropathic hotel. Honours came from abroad as well as at home — he was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur by Napoleon III, and honoured by the King of Denmark — and he served as President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He died at West Shandon on 23 June 1876, and his firm was sold soon after. His name survives less loudly than his consequences, which are the whole story of Clyde shipbuilding — and the River Clyde he did so much to make.
