For roughly a hundred years, from the mid-nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth, the River Clyde was the greatest shipbuilding river in the world. At its peak, on the eve of the First World War, its yards launched around a fifth of all the ships built on earth — liners and battleships, tramp steamers and puffers, dredgers and yachts — and the phrase ‘Clyde-built’ passed into the English language as a guarantee of quality.

The river that made Glasgow
There is an old saying in the city: Glasgow made the Clyde, and the Clyde made Glasgow. Both halves are true. The Clyde was once so shallow a man could wade across it at the Broomielaw — a salmon river, useless to ocean-going ships, which had to unload far downstream at Port Glasgow and Greenock. From the 1770s the city set about changing that: the engineer John Golborne narrowed the channel with rubble jetties so the current would scour its own bed deeper, and generations of dredging did the rest. The result was one of the most consequential pieces of civil engineering in Britain. A shallow river became a deep-water highway running into the heart of the city, and the trade that had made Glasgow rich — tobacco, sugar, cotton — could now be joined by something greater: the building of the ships themselves. The Comet and the age of steam
The decisive moment came in 1812, when Henry Bell’s little paddle steamer the Comet began carrying passengers between Glasgow and Greenock — the first commercially successful steamship in Europe. It was tiny, slow and rickety, but it proved the principle, and the Clyde seized it.
What followed was a marriage of three advantages. The river now had depth. Lanarkshire had coal and iron on the doorstep, and later steel. And Glasgow had a genius for marine engineering — above all in the person of Robert Napier, the ‘father of Clyde shipbuilding’, whose engines were so reliable that when Samuel Cunard wanted ships for the first regular transatlantic mail service in 1840, he came to the Clyde. Napier trained a generation: John Elder, the Thomson brothers and others who founded the river’s greatest yards.
Iron, steel and supremacy
Wooden sail gave way to iron steam, and iron in turn to steel from the 1870s — lighter, stronger, and allowing ever larger and faster ships. Each transition favoured the Clyde, because each demanded exactly what the river had: engineering skill, cheap steel nearby, and a workforce that could be trained to the new trades. By the second half of the nineteenth century the banks from Glasgow to Greenock were an almost continuous line of shipyards, and the Clyde had overtaken not just the rest of Britain but the world.
The great yards
More than three hundred firms built ships on the Clyde over the years, though only thirty or forty were active at any one time. The greatest of them became names known in every port on earth.

The peak, 1913
The scale at its height is hard now to grasp. In 1913, the industry’s greatest year, the Clyde launched around 370 ships totalling roughly 750,000 tons — about a third of everything built in Britain, and close to a fifth of all the shipping built in the world. Some 70,000 people worked in around nineteen yards on the river, and by some counts more than 100,000 across the wider industry and its engine shops. Clyde output exceeded the combined production of France, Germany and Japan.

Life in the yards
The work was hard, dangerous, skilled, proud and desperately insecure. Riveters and their boys, platers, caulkers, drillers, joiners and, later, welders worked in the open air in all weathers, on staging over the water, deafened by the din of hammering on steel. Men were hired when the orders came and paid off when they stopped, and whole families lived on that rhythm. Asbestos, used everywhere in insulation, would kill thousands of them decades later.
But the yards also made a culture. They produced a fierce trade unionism, a black and brilliant humour, and an identity that ran through the tenements of Govan, Partick, Clydebank and Greenock — shipyard towns to their bones. Both Glasgow football clubs drew their support from those communities, and the yards gave the city figures as different as the orator Jimmy Reid and the comedian Billy Connolly, who served his time as a welder at Stephen’s of Linthouse and has always called the yards his university.
Red Clydeside
The shipyards and engineering shops were the heartland of Red Clydeside — the era of militant labour politics that ran from around 1910 to the 1930s, taking in the rent strikes led by Mary Barbour in 1915, mass strikes for shorter hours, and the rise of socialist politics under figures such as John Maclean and James Maxton. The industry’s scale, its insecurity and its concentration of skilled workers made Clydeside one of the most politically charged places in Britain, and gave Glasgow a radical reputation it has never quite lost.
The Clyde at war
Two world wars stretched the river to its limits — and disguised, for a while, what was coming. In the First World War the Clyde built more than 40 per cent of all British tonnage. In the Second it became the arsenal of the war at sea, building and repairing warships and merchant ships on a colossal scale; the story is told on the page on the Clyde shipyards during the Second World War.
That importance made Clydeside a target. On two nights in March 1941 the Luftwaffe attacked the shipbuilding town of Clydebank, around John Brown’s yard, in what became known as the Clydebank Blitz: hundreds were killed, and of some 12,000 houses only a handful escaped damage — one of the most complete destructions of any town in Britain during the war. The yards, remarkably, were back at work within days.
The long decline
The war disguised a rot that had set in long before. The Clyde’s yards were old, cramped, and hemmed in by the river itself; they had under-invested for decades, still building in the open air with riveted plates while competitors moved to welded prefabrication under cover. From the 1950s Japan, Germany and later South Korea — with modern yards, deep water and lower costs — began to take the world’s orders. Britain’s share of world shipbuilding, around 80 per cent in 1914, had collapsed to roughly 5 per cent by 1970.
Industrial relations were bitter, demarcation between the trades was rigid, and the great firms fell one by one. Government tried to save the industry by merger: the Geddes Report of 1966 led to the amalgamation of five upper-river yards into Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in 1968 — Fairfield, Stephen, Connell, John Brown and, briefly, Yarrow. The UCS work-in
In June 1971 the Conservative government refused Upper Clyde Shipbuilders a bridging loan of £6 million, under a policy of no support for ‘lame duck’ industries — and the company collapsed into liquidation, despite a full order book. Some 8,000 jobs faced the axe, and with them whole communities.
What the workers did next made history. Rather than strike — which would have handed the yards to the receiver — the shop stewards, led by Jimmy Reid and Jimmy Airlie, organised a work-in: they occupied the yards and carried on building the ships, to prove the business was viable and to defend, as they put it, the right to work. Reid’s address to the men as it began became famous: there would be, he insisted, ‘no hooliganism, no vandalism and no bevvying’, because the world was watching.
It was watching, and it responded. Money poured in from across Britain and beyond; 80,000 marched through Glasgow; the STUC called its first-ever special conference. In February 1972 the government capitulated, restructuring the yards with £35 million of support. Around 6,500 of the 8,500 jobs were saved. The work-in remains one of the most celebrated episodes in British industrial history — a defeat turned, at least in part, into a victory.
The last yards
The reprieve was not a cure. Govan Shipbuilders and Scotstoun Marine emerged from the wreckage; the Clydebank yard, once John Brown’s, was sold to a Texan oil-rig firm and eventually closed in 2001; Stephen’s of Linthouse shut in 1972. In 1977 what remained was nationalised into British Shipbuilders, and through the 1980s and 1990s the famous names disappeared one after another — Connell, Scotts, Barclay Curle, Denny. The Govan yard passed to the Norwegian group Kvaerner and then, in 1999, to BAE Systems, which had already absorbed Yarrow at Scotstoun.
The Clyde today
Shipbuilding on the Clyde is a fraction of what it was — but it is not dead, and what survives is at the technological summit of the trade. At Govan and Scotstoun, on the sites of Fairfield and Yarrow, BAE Systems builds warships for the Royal Navy: currently the Type 26, or City-class, frigates, the most advanced submarine-hunting ships in the world. They are assembled at Govan — now under cover, in a vast new shipbuilding hall — and fitted out at Scotstoun.
The first of them is named, with some feeling, HMS Glasgow, and is expected to begin sea trials around 2026; her sisters include HMS Cardiff, Belfast, Birmingham and Sheffield. Versions of the design are being built for Australia and Canada, and Norway has agreed to buy the type — ships that will be built on the Clyde, in the largest British warship export order since the Second World War. Downriver at Port Glasgow, Ferguson Marine survives as the last commercial shipbuilder on the river. Between two and three thousand people now work where seventy thousand once did — but they are still building ships on the Clyde, and ‘Clyde-built’ still means something.

- A fifth of the world. Before 1914, roughly one ship in five built anywhere on earth came from this single Scottish river.
- Job No. 534. The Queen Mary’s rusting, half-built hull loomed over Clydebank for more than two years during the Depression, a symbol of the slump, until a government loan restarted work.
- An Oscar for the yards. Seawards the Great Ships, a 1961 documentary about Clyde shipbuilding produced by John Grierson, won an Academy Award — the first Scottish film to do so.
